Prefers moist soil rather that below the water line, plant in full sun to part shade. Dig holes twice as large as the rhizome and add compost, place rhizome pointed side up with roots facing down and keep crown of plant about an inch below the soil level. Water after planting, keeping soil moist during long, hot, dry spells. Divide when rhizomes become over crowded, every two to three years. Cut foliage down to about one inch above the rhizome after first frost in the fall. In the north, add a layer of mulch to prevent winter damage. Remove mulch in the spring.
